Overview

Located in the heart of Melbourne’s bustling Degraves Street, Waffle On is a charming café that bridges French-inspired fare with comforting café classics. This spot is a quietly confident player in Melbourne’s vibrant food scene, offering a concise yet compelling menu centered around waffles and baguettes.

The café’s highlight is its perfectly crafted baguette sandwiches. Freshly baked on-site by a French baker, the bread presents a delightful contrast of crisp crust and soft, flaky interior—a testament to traditional French baking. The Roast Beef Baguette, enriched with melted Brie, fresh salad, and a balanced blend of mustard and pickles, stands out as a savory masterpiece. It captures a satisfying harmony of flavors and textures, appealing both to those seeking a quick yet fulfilling meal and to those who savor subtle culinary nuances.

Waffles here are no less impressive. While not made-to-order, they are freshly prepared earlier in the day, then carefully warmed, preserving their light and airy structure with deep pockets to cradle syrup, ice cream, or chocolate, as noted in their popular Coffee 'N Waffle Special. This approach offers a consistent texture and warmth, making their waffles a cozy indulgence suited for a quick breakfast or a mid-afternoon treat.

The atmosphere at Waffle On is easy-going and welcoming, largely shaped by the friendly owner and staff who create a space inviting to locals and tourists alike. Its size and location make it an ideal spot for those on the move, grabbing a quality takeaway or enjoying a brief pause amidst the city’s rush. The café resonates with anyone who appreciates uncomplicated, honest food—whether a solo traveler craving a taste of Melbourne or a local seeking familiar comfort with a French twist.

From simple, well-executed baguettes to thoughtfully curated waffle specials, Waffle On harnesses the spirit of traditional French baking merged with Melbourne’s love for approachable café fare. It stands as a recommended stop for anyone after a quick yet memorable breakfast or lunch in the city, balancing flavor, freshness, and friendly service in a modest but lively corner of Melbourne’s café culture.

Venturing back to one of the first venues I visited when I first holidayed in Melbourne, @WaffleOnMelbourne. I was here for the waffles but was highly recommended the baguettes so went with the roast beef with the addition of brie. The French guy makes his own bread and it shows. Crispy on the outside, light and flaky, soft on the inside, butter, generously filled with delicious roast beef, salad, tomatoes, mustard, mayo, pickles for acidity, and sandwiching this is rich, creamy, unctuous Brie. Yum! What a combination and I can see why there is a constant queue lining up for this. Then for the waffles. They're not made then and there but were made fresh earlier in the day and then warmed up. I chose a variety with ice cream and maple syrup. Thick, light, with plenty of nooks and crannies for the melting ice cream and maple syrup to nestle into, this was really enjoyable for a small hole in the wall eatery. Great service and a lovely lunch offering with sweet treats to boot. #FrenchFood #lunch #baguette #roastbeef #brie #mayo #pickles #mustard #waffle #icecream #maplesyrup #dessert #sweettooth #Foodie #melbournefood #melbournecbd

Really great baguette! Simple but delicious. Really good ham and cheese, and the bread was still warm. Great value. Nice fellas behind the counter too. Great start to our late morning, fuelled up and ready to hit the city. Have walked past this place a thousand times and never realised that baguettes were their thing. Big signage about the waffles, which isn't my thing. But a really good baguette with fresh bread is a win.

Best Waffle EVER. Baggetes were TOP TIER. French worker is the funniest guy ever. I would say it’s a must-visit –especially since it’s in such a nice area of Melbourne.

The baguette here is always so consistently delicious whenever we visit. We travel 150km from the city just to have this baguette for brunch since it's actually so good. I always get the 'Le Fermer' and add brie cheese to it which makes it flavourful. The chicken breast isn't dry and the mayonnaise that goes with the baguette sandwich is really good. Will try the waffles next time.

We shared a delicious waffle topped with fresh, sweet strawberries and chocolate. It was very, very nice. Service was great too. And what a location! Can't wait to go back and try another waffle and a baguette.
